Engineering Strength of Sedimentary Rocks
- Quartz Sandstones (upper end of 2)
- Generally very strong
- Strength increased by:
- High strength grains, cementation
- Strength decreased by:
- Increased sorting, rounding, voids
- Shale (3)
- Very weak rock! Beware!
- Slope stability problems, weak for foundations
- Limestone (1)
- Medium to high strength
- Strength lowered by:
- Fossils, clastic particles, voids
- Evaporites
- Low to very low strength
- Susceptible to plastic deformation at low stress, and dissolution when exposed to water
