Engineering Strength of Sedimentary Rocks

  • Quartz Sandstones (upper end of 2)
    • Generally very strong
    • Strength increased by:
      • High strength grains, cementation
    • Strength decreased by:
      • Increased sorting, rounding, voids
  • Shale (3)
    • Very weak rock!  Beware!
    • Slope stability problems, weak for foundations
  • Limestone (1)
    • Medium to high strength
    • Strength lowered by:
      • Fossils,  clastic particles, voids
  • Evaporites
    • Low to very low strength
    • Susceptible to plastic deformation at low stress, and dissolution when exposed to water
