Civil Thinking

Types of Strain

  • Elastic
    • Recoverable.  When the stress is removed, the rock returns to its original shape
    • Too much elastic strain?  =>
  • Brittle
    • The rock breaks (nonrecoverable)
  • Ductile (or plastic)
    • The rock “flows.”
    • Deep in the crust, this is accomplished when chemical bonds in the rock’s minerals break, and new ones are quickly formed.  In this way, the rock changes shape for good (nonrecoverable).
    • In the lab, ductile deformation happens through microcracking
