Measuring the orientation of structures

•Dip:  direction and angle that a bed or plane is inclined from horizontal

True dip is only observed in cross-section if that section is vertical and parallel to the dip direction:

• this is rarely the case in the field, so what we usually see are apparent dips
• Need to actually measure the orientation of the structure with a compass to get true dip:
